Building Resilient Brands Through Ethical Leadership

Society has witnessed significant shifts over the past few years, profoundly impacting brand and business leadership. Movements such as #FeesMustFall in South Africa and Kenya’s #RejectFinanceBill2024 have emerged globally. Yet, in almost all instances, business leaders and brands remain conspicuously absent.

Is it time for brands to become more vocal on issues affecting society? Or should they remain silent, only re-emerging once the proverbial dust has settled and consumers are ready to shop again?

These are some of the many questions I posed to Professor Bonang Mohale, the Chairman of Bidvest Limited and SBV Services. Prof. Mohale is one of the most vocal and respected leaders in business today. He is also the author of two highly acclaimed books, Lift As You Rise and Behold The Turtle.

In our conversation, we explore how businesses can build resilient brands through ethical leadership and create societal value beyond profit. One of Prof. Mohale’s many insightful views is that businesses should hire brand managers who live within the communities they serve, ensuring that product and brand messaging remains relevant. He also highlights why businesses should strive to be the most trusted partners of their communities.
