Great advertising ideas rarely arrive bland. Organisations make them bland.
Refilwe Maluleke, Executive Head of Marketing at Discovery Health, and Bridget Harpur, Head of Marketing at Volkswagen South Africa, join The Lead Creative’s Marketers’ Brief to unpack how briefs, approval structures and an overdependence on familiar data can slowly strip an idea of its distinctiveness.
Watch it here:
The problem often begins with the belief that more input will produce a better decision. Instead, every department adds another message, concern or preference. What began as one clear problem becomes a campaign expected to satisfy everyone.
Bridget recalls finding ten Volkswagen colleagues on a creative evaluation call and deciding that the decision-making group needed to shrink to three or four people. Advertising invites opinions from everyone, but effective creative leadership requires a smaller group with a deep understanding of the brand and the people it serves.
Refilwe puts it plainly: “Ultimately you are the marketer and you should use those things as data points to inform your choice.” Marketers must listen widely without handing ownership of the decision to the room.
That responsibility becomes even more important as algorithms, AI and performance platforms make it easier to reproduce what is already working. Familiarity may improve an immediate metric, but distinctiveness builds memory, preference and future demand.
Key insights to watch
- Why a simple, well-articulated insight can be more useful than a ten-page data document.
- How agency experience can give marketers greater empathy and a wider view of other categories.
- Why trusted agency relationships can withstand emotionally charged pitch processes.
- How established brands remain culturally relevant when new, value-driven competitors enter the market.
- Why marketing teams need documented creative processes rather than relying on senior leaders’ intuition.
Marketers’ Brief goes inside the choices leading marketers are making now, while looking ahead to the changes that will determine how brands grow.
