Sipho “Alphi” Mkhwanazi and Jolene Roelfose

Influencer marketing campaigns often lose their impact when the creator’s voice is replaced with the brand’s script. The content may look polished and attract views, but audiences can sense when a partnership feels transactional rather than believable.

In this episode, Fluence Africa Founder and CEO Jolene Roelofse and content creator and media personality Alphi Mkhwanazi unpack the gap between growing investment and uneven consumer trust.

Watch the conversation below:

Better influencer marketing starts with the right creator, a clear shared objective and enough creative freedom for the product to fit naturally into the creator’s world. It also requires time. Trust rarely develops through one post.

“The creator is the conduit. What you actually want to access is the audience,” Jolene explains.

This means evaluating who follows a creator, why they listen and whether the creator can make the brand useful and relevant.

Why Marketing Must Prove Its Value or Fade Into Obscurity

Alphi argues that longevity gives creators the knowledge and confidence to tell better stories: “I do not do one-hit wonders, and I don’t like one-night stands.”

Key insights to look out for

  • Why one-off posts struggle to build trust.
  • How creator freedom improves the work.
  • Why audience fit matters more than follower count.
  • What open communication prevents.
  • Why authenticity cannot be delegated to AI.
