How Challenger Brands Build Community and Trust

The crowded marketing and advertising landscape makes it nearly impossible for challenger brands to stand out. With established players dominating most industries, these brands need to focus on being memorable to succeed. This was the complexity OPPO South Africa faced when it entered the local smartphone market during the pandemic in 2020.

In this episode of The Lead Creative Podcast, I spoke to Avashnee Moodley, Head of Marketing at OPPO South Africa, about how the brand has built trust and connected with its audience. Fresh from presenting at the Loeries, where she discussed the evolution of storytelling in advertising, Avashnee shared valuable insights on how challenger brands can thrive in competitive markets.

OPPO’s strategy focused on delivering quality at an affordable price. By launching mid-tier devices that met consumer needs without compromising on features, the brand earned trust in a market often sceptical of new players.

But price alone isn’t enough to stand out. Avashnee highlighted the need for challenger brands to find niche ways to connect with audiences. OPPO tapped into local passion points like sports and creativity, forming partnerships with Orlando Pirates and launching initiatives such as the Reno Academy to support photographers and content creators. These efforts helped OPPO build genuine connections and embed itself in South African culture.

Authenticity has been central to this approach. Instead of focusing on one-off deals, they invest in long-term collaborations with creatives, ensuring campaigns resonate deeply with audiences.

While sales targets are crucial, storytelling remains the foundation of strong brands. By crafting narratives that reflect their values and foster emotional connections, challenger brands can break through the noise and build loyalty.

Avashnee’s perspective is a clear reminder: delivering value, embracing cultural relevance, and prioritising authenticity are the pillars for challenger brands looking to succeed.
