Why Safe Advertising Makes Brands Forgettable

Brands operate under intense scrutiny, with tighter budgets, real-time performance tracking and a constant need for every decision to prove its value. In that environment, it’s easy to gravitate towards advertising that feels safe. The unintended consequence is that safety often undermines the very objective it aims to protect, as advertising blends into the background and fails to leave a lasting impression.

Listen to the conversation below:

In our conversation with Chris Botha, MD of Park Advertising, we explored this tension. He reflected on the reality many marketers face, needing to balance caution with the responsibility of building brands that are remembered, especially in a climate of shrinking budgets. As he put it, safe advertising tends to become bland if we are not careful, and that instinct to protect often leads to work that is technically sound but creatively indistinct.

Chris brings the perspective of someone who has seen multiple cycles in the industry. He does not dismiss data or measurement; rather, he values both deeply, while questioning how they are applied in practice.

We also touched on how this plays out in media. As more channels become skippable, the challenge for brands is less about presence and more about how they show up. Out-of-home is regaining attention partly because it remains visible, yet even there, distinctiveness comes down to the strength of the idea rather than the channel itself.

More insights from the conversation

  • Bravery requires alignment between client, agency and media partners
  • Time pressure erodes creative quality
  • Performance metrics should guide decisions, not limit them
  • The interplay between channels is becoming more important than single-channel thinking
  • Trust is shifting toward people and communities in an AI-driven environment
Safe decisions may protect budgets in the short term, but they rarely build enduring brands. Memorable work demands a level of conviction, and often, a willingness to move beyond what feels comfortable.
